Most breweries traditionally sell dried brewers’ spent grain only as livestock feed. Yet the feed market is highly fluctuating with unstable prices and thin profit margins. With moisture controlled at 10%–14%, dried spent grain features stable quality and long storage life. It can be reused in many cost-effective ways to expand profit channels and raise overall resource value.
Rich in organic matter, dried spent grain works as a high-quality auxiliary material for organic fertilizer production. When dried to 12% moisture or lower, it can be stored for a long time and fermented together with crop straw and livestock manure to produce standard commercial organic fertilizer. It is worth noting that dried spent grain cannot be applied to farmland directly. Full decomposition is required to prevent crop root burn, making it a practical option for breweries to realize in-plant solid waste recycling.
Dried spent grain can replace costly cottonseed hulls and sawdust as a growing substrate for oyster mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms and other common edible fungi. With moisture adjusted to 10%–13%, it is ready for direct batching. Featuring lower cost and good air permeability, it is in steady long-term demand from local mushroom planting bases.
After drying to below 10% moisture and pulverization, spent grain can be pressed into biomass pellets. The finished fuel can either support the boiler heating system inside the brewery to cut operational costs or be sold to external buyers. It solves the common problems of spent grain accumulation and solid waste disposal, turning brewery waste into reusable resources. This is one of the most suitable solutions for small and medium-sized breweries.
Unlike wet spent grain that easily goes moldy and cannot be stored, dried spent grain supports long-term preservation and flexible feeding, making it an ideal material for anaerobic fermentation. The biogas generated can be used for factory heating and power generation, and the fermented residues can be further processed into organic fertilizer, forming a complete and sustainable resource recycling system.
High-quality spent grain processed by low-temperature drying has no scorching or mildew. It serves as a premium raw material for pet food and enjoys a much higher market price than ordinary livestock feed. With simple secondary processing, it can also be used as a culture medium for microbial fermentation, widely adopted by biological agent and fermented feed manufacturers. This niche market maintains stable demand and better profit margins.
Further deep processing can extract active substances such as protein peptides and polysaccharides from spent grain for food and health product applications. It can also be made into wastewater adsorption materials and biodegradable raw materials. However, these processing methods require large equipment investment and complex production procedures, which are not feasible for most small and medium-sized breweries.
For food and pet food materials: Adopt low-temperature drying to retain nutrients and avoid carbonization and discoloration.
For fuel and organic fertilizer production: Prioritize low moisture content, with protein loss not a key concern.
For commercial finished products: Keep moisture steadily at 10%–14% to ensure clean and uniform material quality.
Breweries can select targeted spent grain utilization solutions according to local industrial conditions. Breaking the single sales mode of animal feed helps maximize the economic benefits of brewery by-products and achieve higher resource utilization value.
