Biomass Drying: Varying Demands for Pellets, Bedding & Pallets

Published: 2026-08-07Back to list

In the recycling of biomass waste (such as sawdust, wood shavings, and offcuts), processing plants often tend to use general-purpose biomass dryer. However, the three major downstream industries—biomass pellets, animal bedding, and wood pallets—have distinct industrial standards regarding the physical form and moisture content of the raw materials. A mismatch between the drying process and downstream requirements can easily lead to the rejection of the finished product.

Below are the specific technical specifications and dryer selection requirements for these three downstream industries:

1. Biomass Pellet Processing

Raw Material and Moisture Requirements: Primarily utilizes fine sawdust; the final moisture content must be strictly controlled between 10% and 15%. Excessive moisture causes pellets to burst during compression, while insufficient moisture prevents lignin from melting and binding effectively, resulting in molding failure.

Process and Equipment Selection Requirements: Fine sawdust remains suspended within the drying drum and is highly prone to flash combustion at high temperatures. Therefore, the drying system must feature a "triple-pass" structure and a spark-extinguishing system; by extending the material's travel path, uniform heat exchange is achieved at relatively moderate temperatures.

2. Animal Bedding

Raw Material and Moisture Requirements: The primary raw materials are large or medium-sized wood shavings; the required final moisture content is 10%–12%. This industry enforces strict dust control standards, as excessive fine sawdust mixed in can cause respiratory diseases in animals.

Process and Equipment Selection Requirements: Wood shavings are characterized by low density and a high specific surface area. High-velocity airflow in traditional sawdust dryers can easily carry them away, while aggressive internal lifting flights can shatter the shavings. Consequently, equipment must be customized with low-velocity, variable-frequency induced draft systems and breakage-preventing curved lifting flights to preserve the integrity of the shavings.

3. Wooden Pallets

Raw Material and Moisture Requirements: This category covers raw timber for pallets or wood chips used to manufacture molded pallet blocks; the final moisture content must be maintained between 10% and 18%. Excessive moisture not only leads to mold growth during transport but also causes cracking and deformation due to uneven drying stress, resulting in failure to meet the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) ISPM 15 phytosanitary standards.

Process and Equipment Selection: Pallet materials typically feature large particle sizes or volumes, requiring a long heat penetration cycle. Rapid drying often results in a "dry outside, wet inside" condition. Equipment must utilize large-volume, low-speed single-drum dryers or specialized timber drying kilns to ensure the core moisture of the material is fully released.

Recommendations and Configuration Confirmation

To ensure the drying line's design capacity and product yield meet expectations, we recommend clarifying the following technical parameters before purchasing or commissioning a rotary drum dryer:

Specific Downstream Application: Clarify whether the primary output is biomass pellets, wood shavings for animal bedding, or pallet lumber.

Target Moisture Range: Specify the initial moisture content of the feedstock and the contractually required final moisture content; these factors directly determine the drum length, diameter, and heat source power.

Material Purity: Confirm whether the raw material contains impurities such as bark, soil, or sand to assess the need for a pre-screening system.

If you require drying tests for specific materials or a production line layout plan, please provide details regarding your raw material properties and downstream requirements; our technical engineers will evaluate the specific system configuration for you.
