Fresh chicken manure carries Salmonella, E. coli, and parasite eggs. Many farmers ask: does drying alone fully eliminate these hazards? The short answer: simple air drying only slows pathogen growth. Controlled high-temperature drying in a chicken manure dryer can kill most bacteria and parasite eggs, but it depends on temperature and retention time.
Natural sun drying just removes moisture. It cannot reliably kill heat-resistant bacteria or worm eggs. Once the manure picks up moisture again, surviving pathogens may reactivate. This is why sun-dried chicken manure still needs composting before safe use.

One more tradeoff. Too high temperature or over-long retention will burn organic matter and waste nitrogen. Well-tuned chicken manure dryers balance pathogen kill, nutrient retention and fuel cost.
